I've tried Bioware's DAO and while it is a good game quite far from the BG series. They hyped (at least the beginning) that they are going back to their roots (To BG) with this game, whell they lost their direction on their way back:)

Well this post is probably pointless, just wanted to rant a bit about BG. Now I am playing again with BG2:) and still a very lovable game even with its low res graphics:)

I'm playing DA:O at the moment. They did put a lot of work in the world, story and NPCs. The banters between Morrigan and Alistair for example are hilarious.

But i miss exploring, bird's eye view (it sucks in DA) and the (A)D&D rules. I also hate the control feeling and camera view in aurora engine games (which DA:O is based on).

Baldur's Gate also has an endless learning curve, which i don't really see in DA:O.

Edit: I would like to know what the other BG veterans here think of DA:O.

a) This is offtopic.

b) I feel it plays more like Guild Wars than BG2, particularly in the spell system, which is a lot less complex. Definitely the first thing I'll mod: better prot skills.

Still, its very good.

I have always loved BGII, will always. It was my childhood game, and as such I learned amazing quantities of new things every time I played it through, I've gone through it with all the NPC's, as well as alone (mage slayer, fu*k yeah), and everything about the game I've idolized and worshipped.
Thus it doesn't come as much of a surprise when I say that Dragon age doesn't live up to the good name of a game falling back to "old fashioned gaming" 'couse it isn't old. It's brand new with amazingly new graphics which I must say ARE amazing, although it "could" be better, but I have stopped more than once in this game just to enjoy the view. The characters are also quite fantastic, amazing voice acting and I find myself actually enchanted by Leliana and Morrigan, something that hasn't really happened since Imoen (BGII version ofc) and Edwin, as well as Minsc and Boo. Classic.

So in conclusion, BGII was a gem, an ancient artifact of fantasy gaming, something that will never be done again and will never be bested, and nothing will ever replace that experience that you found in that beautiful world. But Dragon Age comes close.

Am I the only one who prefers BG to BGII, overall? I think the original BG is superior in terms of the exploration, music, story, characters, setting, atmosphere. I like BGII more in terms of combat and character customization. I'm still on a current run through BGII so I haven't bother to pick up Dragon Age yet, but I plan to.

As someone who is constantly starting new trilogy runs, I'm always playing BG1 over BG2. Neither are better games; but BG1 has INCREDIBLE pacing; and the sheer roleplayability is amazing.

Every new game, I play through a different personality. Just after Gorion dies, I have the noble knight who charges to FAI at first opportunity to track down his father's killers. I have the sly thief who embarks south to loose any potential followers. And I have the incredibly stupid cleric that decides, by his god given strength, that he is able to clear out Durlag's Tower himself.

Brilliant games.

Quite possibly! It's been a while, but I did enjoy hanging out in the Lord of the Rings modules; though I never stayed for long, my grasp of 3E is shaky, at best. Refresh my memory as to where I met you.

To keep this vaguely on topic, NWN is also a great game, but can barely match the plot of BG. I adore the NWN toolset; quite true to its claim to fame, unlimited adventure.

However, NWN lacked the homely feel of Baldur's Gate. Of course the game serves a different purpose, but there's no escaping the fact that BG has far more memorable characters, a MUCH better plot, and I may be biased but 2E rules are awesome!

I know that the NWN/BG comparison has been done to death, but that was to keep it on topic Sorry guys.

I think the immense power of BG is that it draws me in as a die-hard fan, even though I've never finished ToB The plot intricacies grab me to this day, and there's always a conversation that I've never seen before, or a strategy I've yet to try.

Happy gaming everyone; us true BG fans must be considered the luckiest gamers alive, god knows what happens to WoW players...

I uh... don't know if DA:O is better than BG1 and 2. The BG series, all together has a 94 out of 100 ranking (Half Life 2 and expansion are 97, top 10 game no. 1 for me). I am not yet nearly as done with DA:O, according to the options, I'm on 10% of the game after what, 17 hours or something. Yet, there is something missing. I like the camera and controls very much, a very flexible game. But, yet the essence is missing. I mean, as a dwarf commoner, the first thing you kill is (maybe, depending on the decisions) a warrior of noble origins that is supposed to be heckfully experienced. And you take him out with ease. In BG1, try going against a, I don't know, the Gatewarden of Candlekeep and let's see who's daddy?
So for now, DA:O is 86 out of 100. Better than any other non BG BioWare game for sure.

Or maybe Tethtoril. Or even Gorion, spawn a couple of Drizzts and let's see who actually is daddy?

PS: Tethtoril, of course. Why is he impossible to kill?

Ehh... because I had to restart a game after 18 hours passed with the other one. So I lost 18 hours of gameplay, UNTIL a solution is found. For now, I am really enjoying the mage origin. I like freezing things and then crushing them. Gives a feel of being Arno...errr... I mean, Mr. Freeze?

I'm looking forward to DAO, and it's interesting to read that Dark Lauron liked Half Life, as I did. It's such a different game from the BG series, yet the two shared a wry sense of humor I found very appealing.

One thing that BG2 did better than any other game I've seen since is balance player choice with an overall story.

The 'open-ended' gaming of Oblivion didn't work at all for me. The 'do whatever you want' approach seems suited to MMORPG's; in a single-player game, you can have a complex story where you are the main character.

In BG2, there's a great deal of freedom in how you go about the game, yet there's also a strong sense of story, of converging conflicts with you at the center. It's brilliant.

Yet, if you play Mage and try fighting a Templar, you WILL lose.
