So I was in the adventurer mart the other day and I spotted a sword that inflicted +1 fire damage that was pretty expensive (near the bottom of the list, I forget what the sword was called). It appeared to be quite expensive because of the fire damage. I wonder, why would +1 fire damage make an item much more expensive than an equivalent +1 normal damage?

Don't know for sure, but I think that the fire damage can bypass protections like Stoneskin. Also, with the sword you are capable of killing trolls, while with normal, non acid or fire dealing weapons, it will just take them down. Apart from this? Don't really know.

How apt that you should talk about Trolls, I'm in the fortress taking down trolls in my current play through. Fire is essential for those, that's true. I suppose it's good for werewolves too.

Werewolves have no special vulnerability to fire. The only similarity they have with trolls is they both regenerate. Hit them hard and fast and they die. Trolls you have to hit hard and fast, then stop, wait for them to fall over, and THEN do a point of fire or acid damage.

Werewolves normally cannot regenerate fire damage, or acid, which is why BG forces you to hit them with it to get a kill.

hehe good point, I mixed it up with the troll there. Werewolves aren't supposed to be able to regenerate fire, though, similar to trolls.

That sounds like something that's in a second edition source book somewhere, but never got implemented in the game. Which is OK by me, given the coding required doesn't match up to the minimal impact it would have. I would far rather they spend the extra time squashing bugs.

Well now I'm tempted to pick up the expensive sword that does +1 fire damage just so I don't have to memorise burning hands multiple times on the off chance I go up against trolls with my solo enchanter/thief character.

Can you say "wand of fire"? If all you're worried about is finishing the trolls, the wand is a better investment, imho. As a solo character you should have enough coin to get a full wand. You can use the Scorchers from the wand to finish trolls and still have 50 fireball charges for whatever suits your fancy.

Don't waste your money on that, you will find a better weapon and sell it in about 10 minutes. Where you find trolls, you usually also find a stash of fire/acid arrows. Personnally I like to use MMMs to finish them off.

Actually, if that's the sword I'm thinking of, it's well worth the money. It hits harder than it looks.

If all you want is a bit of fire damage, fire arrows are really common--just save them for finishing trolls.

Personally, I'd prefer to use something that affects a single target rather than an AoE. In the middle of a battle, it's too easy to end up frying your party members in the process. Unless I was playing solo without the ability to use bows, I'd go for acid or fire arrows.

Fire arrows are an interesting idea... I am indeed playing solo and I do have two rings of fire resistance (although I don't wear them at present, my solo character currently wears a ring of free action and a ring of air elemental charming)... with fire arrows and 80% fire resistance, with a spell on top, I could be immune to their effects.

Why would you need fire resistance with fire arrows? They only affect the target, not you. Or did you mean Arrows of Detonation?
