As developers push to make their titles more "cinematic" I am finding that I can't play them. I have loved BG, BG2, NWN and would like to continue buying Biowares great RPGs, but if they have gone all cinematic on me, it may be out for me.
I am motion sickness sensitive. I can't play FPS games and what they often call "Third Person" these days doesn't work for me. Someone insisted I try oblivion because it had a "third person" mode. This did not help in the slightest (luckily it was borrowed so cost me nothing). Same thing when I recently bought LJ: Dreamfall. I figured older adventure game, should be no problem. Again toast. Annoying because I paid to find out.
All they did was move the camera behind the character, it does not change the crux of the problem which is essentially "mouse look" mode. You move the mouse and the viewport swings. This kills me.
I can play KOTOR because it doesn't do that, though I get a hint of queasiness at times. This is my limit for an enjoyable game. NWN is perfect as the camera barely moves unless you move it.
So Please try to include a mode that has the minimum connnection with the mouse. Where the mouse is a pointer within the environment and does not swing the viewport.
Also if there is no demo engine can you at least release a video of the different modes so I can tell if it is playable. I am not buying any more games without being reasonable sure I can play them. |

While I doubt it's going to be Bourne Ultimatum style motion sickness, I guess you could play in an isometric mode if they have one). |

Don't they have a combat view and an exploration view? Depending on how the camera moves between the two viewpoints, that could be bad news. I don't think there's much info on that yet, so it's kinda speculation. |

Dragon Age may not be the game for you, then. _________________ Wootabaga. |

I actually have the same exact problem. I can't play DOOM or any of the new FPS games.
I also found NWN2 to be a bit crappy in the way it dealt with camera positioning / transparency of walls, etc.
Will there be any similarities to DA and The Witcher engine? That seems to provide pretty flexible view options, and it's easy on the eyes. |

I've had that sort of problem with fast-paced games, but Oblivion and a game like BioShock both worked okay. The critical factor was that I was able to mostly move or turn slowly, unlike in games which require a lot of quick movement in narrow corridors. I've learned to accept the over-the-shoulder (ots) viewpoint, and even have coped with the first-person viewpoint if I had to do so, but I'll always be partial to the top-down isometric. That's what I set The Witcher in when I played, and it's a good thing. I tried the ots view and it was incredibly bad; I couldn't handle it for more than a few minutes. A KotOR viewpoint was okay, and I had no problem there.
So, if DA offers a view like KotOR, at least, then I should be able to manage fine. I don't expect it to be terribly fast-paced, but I'd love it if there was a top-down isometric choice. Sounds like that's not going to be there, though, so I'll have to deal. _________________ And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad These dreams in which I'm dying, are the best I've ever had |

I liked the KOTOR view, but I wonder how easy it will be to issue commands to the squad if DA is more tactical, plus it's a party of 4 instead of 3. _________________ Just say NO to UCW |

Wow, if you think that's bad try Gears of War or Crysis with full motion blur. You'll be sick within seconds. I get mild motion sickness from some shooters, generally when framerates are too low or the aforementioned motion blur is turned up. Excessive bloom/HDR also produces headaches/nausea occasionally.
It is true that more and more games have been giving me problems lately. Motion blur is by far the biggest culprit for me and I'd wish they'd give an option to disable it completely and not just set it to low. |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but on first glance this seems something that's relatively easy to account for - just provide a means of locking the camera and turning it stepwise by 45-degree steps, instead of smoothly swinging along with the mouse.
Alternatively, people could play wearing those acupressure pads that help really well against motion sickness. _________________ On life's journey faith is nourishment, virtuous deeds are a shelter, wisdom is the light by day and right mindfulness is the protection by night. When I got my first LCD monitor (5ms) I became very distracted with the blurring it caused compared to a CRT (when moving the camera) and also suffered motion sickness for a while. But eventually I just got used to it and it no longer bothers me. Maybe trying to stick it out can also help you, if you haven't tried that already. In any case, I hope you can work something out with DA. |

Yes it should be relatively easy to include a less Kinetosis inducing control mode, if they choose to, but judging by Stanleys comments it doesn't seem likely that they did. I guess NWN will be my last Bioware game.
Gaming is becoming more closed to a chunk of the population. People think this is rare, largely because most motion sensitive people tend to avoid gaming if their first exposure makes them ill, so people who are into gaming have already weeded out this chunk of the population.
I guess I will be saving money on new games and the HW upgrades needed to play.

Lowlander, you are not alone. Based on Stanley's replies, it looks like I will not be able to enjoy Dragon Age, either. This is rather unfortunate, since I have been looking forward to playing the game for years |
