Alot of recent rpgs have had arenas(gothic 3, jade empire, oblivion). They have been one of my favorite part of these games. I was wondering if there was a possibility of an arena in dragon age. |

While i think an arena is cool in certain games. Im hoping DA is not quite the sort of game where an Arena will fit in, unless it is heavily tied to the plot. _________________ Michael Furlong |

Maybe, or maybe not. While I agree it could be fun, I definitely wont be sad if they wouldnt add it.
Elder Scrolls games contains arenas because the very first ES game was named "Arena", and was originally planned as a pure Gladiator game.
I havent played the others, but Gothic is definitely an Action RPG, not a RPG, and Jade Empire, according to what I read about it, is actually an Action game, with only very few RPG elements left.
Anyway, if they add an editor to the game, which is quite likely, there will be surely an PvP arena module for it soon enough. _________________ We are such stuff / As dreams are made on, and our little life / Is rounded with a sleep. - Prospero, The Tempest, by Shakespeare |

The dwarves use arenas as a method of clan distinguishment and bloodsport entertainment -- they call them Provings (and the arena itself is a Proving Ground). _________________ Zevran: "Hello my stocky little friend!" Not true, it has many good to excellent quests, it was just rushed at the end. _________________ Just say NO to UCW |

JE is an Action RPG. It's an Avction RPG that has more (or at least as much) RPGness as many RPGs including and espicially the BG games.
As for the actual topic, areans are cool. JE's my favorite 'cause it wans't just about combat but had role-playing to it. It wa sbasiclaly a superior version of KOTOR's. G3's 'arena's were fun; but was all about the fighting.
The DA dwarf arenas (proving grounds) seem like they have potential. _________________ ME > KOTOREdited By Volourn on 12/11/07 19:23 |

Bloodsport entertainment, so the combatant kill each other for clan recognition? Intresting. They also brand those who are "casteless" and treat them like lesser people.

oh, just one more thing about arens. Please no cinematics/intros, etc. In oblivion you have to wait for that voice to stop talking to go and kill those minotaurs.. it took me longer to wait for the gates to open than to kill the enemies.. in the Witcher you have the little finishing move at the end of a fistfight, which gets just plain annoying and time consuming after.. 3 times. those seconds spent on cinematics are lost on gameplay _________________ DA is a zombie musical! |

Not necessarily. There are different kinds of Provings. The rules of each match are decided before the match begins. It can be a duel to the death (and tends to be, if one is fighting for honor) or to first blood. Breaking these rules, for instance, killing someone during a fight to first blood, results in pretty serious consequences. And the Provings that serve as entertainment don't normally result in a death. They'd just run out of combatants that way, and the fans would be annoyed. |

So does that imply that at times, we may have the choice to kill someone in the arena even though it is to first blood -- And deal with the consequences? |

When such things happen--and they happen very rarely--it's usually an accident. Someone got carried away and went too far. The Provings are almost sacred in dwarven culture, and choosing to disregard the rules of the Proving Grounds is like giving the ancestors the finger. It's not acceptable and you're pretty much bringing shame upon your entire house. Most dwarves wouldn't do it if they could help it.
Whether or not we give you the choice to do it... well, that's like asking if we're going to give you the choice to go on a mad killing spree and murder everyone in a town. No, you don't get that choice. Sure we could give you that choice, but what would it add to the story, really? |
