Will there be anything similar to the codex in Mass Effect in DA? I've been enjoying reading through it and would definitely like to see its return in future games.
It also solves that nagging problem of filling in the player with information/background that the character should know, without some awkward npc conversation. _________________ Clogging the internet, one post at a time. |

What are the chances of it being displayed as clippings from different sources stuck in a scrap book? As if the player finds bits of information as the game progresses and keeps them. Some are written in the players handwriting, some are written in other peoples handwriting, some are printed more formally...
I thought that might be a nice 'less science-y' way of presenting it. I really liked the VO for the codex however, which makes sense in ME because you can imagine its a computer talking to you. Not sure if you can still get away with some generic narrator voicing them in DA. Perhaps you get all the more important factoids from the same person, so its their voice you hear. _________________

I don't believe the DA version of the Codex is going to be VO'd at all, actually. But I guess we'll see how it ends up. _________________ Zevran: "Hello my stocky little friend!" Oghren: "Huh. Good, and please don't go into so much fine detail. A lot of the ME codex stuff is good, but the real "technical" nitty-gritty just bores me to tears. I really think it would be better if it stuck to interesting facts and highlights, instead of trying to be a full encyclopedia. I don't see a problem with codex VO though, because obviously it's magic and has a personality of its own. _________________ Just say NO to UCW |

Heh, I didn't think of that possibility. A magical talking book that likes to tell you about new stuff from time to time _________________

lol, the DA version should be authentic. so, poorly scrawled notes on a piece of parchment, with blood and sweat drops all over, not to mention the dust and mud.. and from time to time you lose some pieces, and it just gets more confusing.. And dwarves should write their notes on marble plates instead of parchment! You know, hammer and chisle style
I dunno, I just never got the whole journal poping up magically, but I like it coz if you get stuck, you just re-read some parts and you know where to go _________________ DA is a zombie musical! |

TheDAS doesn't exactly have a lot of magical talking books... If our Codex talks, it's much more likely that it's because you have an annoying troupe of minstrels following you around...
"When danger reared its ugly head, he bravely turned his tail and fled. Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Robin..."

OK, I'll go for the annoying minstrels. And how about making the codex in rhyme while you're at it? _________________ Just say NO to UCW |

Some people are going to like the technical nitty-gritty, after all. Others are going to skim it. That said, having an un-science-y Codex does mean the nitty-gritty will also be less science-y.

Not having VO does provide us a bit more freedom in this case, however. Personally I don't think it is such a terrible thing to ask someone to read, so long as it's optional. _________________ Zevran: "Hello my stocky little friend!" Oghren: "Huh. I concur.
That would be awesome.

Well you say it's optional, but you have to remember some of us are compulsive. Also having to skip over a lot of nitty gritty you could skip over something really interesting. I guess part of it is in how it's organized too. _________________ Just say NO to UCW |

Quote: Also having to skip over a lot of nitty gritty you could skip over something really interesting. Well THAT part is up to you. I don't advise skipping, I'm just saying that you can read or not read, as you like.

It would be really nice to see a codex of sorts, it would certainly help make the game more in depth which for an RPG is always a good thing.
Plus we know and appreciate the work that has gone into making the setting and I'm sure we would all really love to see as much as possible from that in the game. |
