We previously announced that Papermonk’s "The Nether Scrolls" and Xxtayce’s "Shadohaunt" were the two finalists in the NWVault Module Contest. After some tough deliberation, we have named an overall winner.

I never tried Shadohunt, but I did play Nether Scrolls. It wasn't too bad, but I had a hard time with the dialog. It seemed that rarely did you have more than 1 option and I've always been annoyed at dialog that puts too many words in your mouth. Overall I was a bit disappointed with the entries that I did play thru. None of them sucked, but none were really good either. At least not in comparision to the better mods on the vault. My guess is that the deadline had something to do with this. Most builders can only work in their spare time. So they couldn't spend as many hours tweaking as they needed. Anyway, just my opinion. I only played The Nether Scrolls, so I can't comment on Xxtacye's work, but I thought Papermonk's effort was excellent. I'm more of a hack-n-slash player, so I can't say I really noticed the dialogue limitations mentioned above.
The Nether Scrolls was fun and bug free, and provided me a seamless transition between SoU and HotU. The fact that all these builders had such a short timeframe to finish their mods makes it that much more impressive.
Anyhow, Congrats Papermonk! _________________ -Seryn

Congrats Papermonk!
Excellent Work on The Nether Scrolls!
I would also like to say fine job Xxtacye on Shadohaunt.
I really enjoyed playing both modules, and I know it must have been a really hard decision to choose just one to be a winner.
But in my book, both are winners!
Congrats Again.

Won't play Nether Scrolls because it requires a hakpak. Shadowhaunt held merit. The Shadow Queen?.....top choice. |

I didn't have a problem choosing a winner. I couldn't get past the first ten minutes of Shadohaunt. Being the "supposed" ruler of a city in the Shadow Plane... and running tons of Fed-Ex quests? *laughs* I'm not sure how Shadohaunt ever got picked. A true ruler would've told someone else to fix it, get it, do it, etc. instead of being forced to run around doing it himself. _________________ sotae |

No suprises here; to it's merit and demerit, Nether Scrolls felt exactly like playing the interlude to SoU. Not suprised that Bio picks something close to it's own work.
On the other hand I prefer Shadohaunt simply because it was more creative, despite other flaws. _________________ Asian/Oriental Content for NWN |

It is unfortunate that The Nether Scrolls won this contest. I played both. Shadohaunt had a stronger story and I appreciated support for all the SoU henchmen (even Mischa!). The Nether Scrolls started off with a strong story, but in the second half the story fell flat and the module degenerated into a showcase for custom content. That is, the Nether Scrolls was more flash and less substance.
I know the combat in Shadohaunt was critized as "too easy", but the reverse criticism could be leveled at the Nether Scrolls. I can't help feeling that many consider "too easy" to be more damning than "too hard" when it comes to combat. |

First, grats to Paper for the win!
Second, Bioware didn't play test the other entires? Just the 2 most popular voted mods? I've been checking the comments page for Nether Scrolls and it would appear that since the 1.61 patch there has been some issues with that mod.....
Shadohaunt on the other hand just doesn't peak my intrest that much. No offence to the hard work done by Xx. We all have our own taste.
As for TomG's, The Shadow Queen, it has been recently updated to work with HotU 1.61 and I have read some positive comments about this mod.
So I wonder.... If Bioware had included The Shadow Queen in their final picks for top mod, would the results would be the same.... Hmmm....

I was starting to wonder if this contest had been forgotten about... *grin* Thank you for those of you who passed along your congratulations to me - it's nice to see that some of the NWN community has manners! - but the real praise should go to Papermonk.
Congrats!!! _________________ What came after SoU, but before HotU? Shadohaunt: Now an award-winning module! |

Heh.. thanks. I admit, I was preparing my asbestos suit the moment this was announced. I know it must have been very, very tough. Shadohaunt was excellent work.
"and it would appear that since the 1.61 patch there has been some issues with that mod..... "
As for that... yeah, but no more than normal. Most people go in and play with no issues, and then a few don't. It's always like that. 1.61 did some ODD things and I've had a hard time tracking them down. The only "solid" bug reports I've gotten I've been completely unable to reproduce. If I can't reproduce them, I just can't fix them.
But I appreciate all the support the community gave the module, and appreciate everyone who took the time to report bugs and other issues. And I certainly appreciate the other contestants - :grins: I know very well how hard it was to slip these things in under a fairly tight deadline.
I think thanks goes to everyone who took their time to help the community and give us many options to play through. Nether Scrolls may not be your cup of tea, try Shadowhaunt, if not it The Shadow Queen, etc. I think we ended up seeing a nice cross-section of work. Congrats to Papermonk!
However, I disagree that Nether Scrolls is the best. Don't get me wrong, it was an EXCELLENT mod. One of the best I've played! But I don't think it bridged SoU to HotU as well as The Shadow Queen did. Among the two finalists, I also felt Shadowhaunt was a better bridge.
If the contest was simply "make the best mod," Nether Scrolls was clearly the winner. But the contest was to make the best bridge and I felt its weak bridge was its only fault.
Bottom line, though, I enjoyed all three, so we players are the real winners!
Thanks to all the authors who contributed and congrats again to Papermonk.Edited By Akak on 01/09/04 00:00 |
