Considering the substantially higher cost?
I never had the chance to analyze results in combat. But I did buy a short bow + 1 for Imoen and a sling + 1 for Jaheira. And I'm wondering if its worthwhile to get a composite long bow + 1 for Khalid. I'm carrying 7200 gold and it costs 3000 (ouch). |

Bows and slings in general don't tend to give such BIG advantages apart from some damage and hit chance. Missile weapons don't break and they won't be counted when killing a normal weapon immune being (in that case, only the missile counts). Swords and other things, on the other hand, will harm normal weapon immune beings, won't break and will even give that small boost to damage and to your THAC0. Still, bows in BG1 are an excellent weapon and should be really used a lot. I'd say you can buy it, even if then in some mid game you get a very nasty longbow. But then again, you'll also have plenty of money in the future. _________________ You REALLY want to buy Dragon Age Origins. Seriously. Do it. |

What does a +1 bring to the table?
1.) They never break. 2.) They increase your chanse to hit, and your damage. 3.) Certain monsters require +1 or above weapons to be hit.
This is shown much more in Baldur's gate 2. But they still are improvements to your regular weapon. Is it worth it? That depends. There alot of better weapons out there, and if you search you will find them. In a certain camp you will find a very fine Longbow. And You will be able to pick up a very fine longsword from a not so charismatic person . Not to mention a wonderful hammer from a person with a very... Boney family!
I would wait with buying the bow if i was you, And see what you pick up along the way. You will find many great weapons if you go out exploring! |

what about +1 armors?
Is a chainmail + 1 any better than a regular splint mail? Or a medium shield + 1 vs. a large shield? |

They give you a lower armor class than the "regular" versions but I'm not sure if there are any other special abilities that make a chain mail+1 better than a splint mail.
I'd say magical weapons are very worth it. They don't break, they give extra damage and a lot of the better ones have extra special abilities. And if you ever play BG2 you pretty much won't be able to complete it without using +4 weapons |

The weapons are definately worth it. You say that spending 3000 out of your 7200 would hurt, but money is there to be spent and it doesn't help you win any fights. Most of the games best weapons are found/looted but the Composite bow+1 is one of the games best weapons.
Armours is a little more complex. Stand alone chain+1 is better than generic splint because it weighs less. Some npcs (eg Viconia) can really do without the extra weight. However wearing magic armour prohibits using an item "of Protection". It is better to wear generic chain and a RoP+1 than chain+1 and no ring since the ring also gives a save bonus.
A medium shield+1 is obviously better than a non magical large shield. Medium shield+1 gives +2AC vs all types, large shield gives +2 vs missile but only +1 vs everything else. |

I never buy any armour other than the shadow armour. You can pick up good armour for free. Much better to use spare cash for buying necklace of missiles. |

Dispite how good they are, I always thought they were far too expenisve. _________________ "This universe is vast and to survive, we will have to face Sovegren togeather!" Gavin Shepard, Commander of the SSV Normandy. |
