Dhak the L1 barbarian didn't survive the halberds of Vax and Zal. Good luck all, time for me to reroll again.

Sorry about Dhak, Gate. Hope you have more luck with your next character.

Update on Deyeria the Blade:

The group consists of myself, Kivan (Swashbuckler), Coran (Bounty Hunter), Montaron (Assassin), and Viconia (Jester). We are clearly lacking another bard, and when I spot one in front of the Burning Wizard Inn I immediately walk up to him.

I get no chance to speak, for he has a proposition for me; turns out his mistress needs some bodyguards for 300g, which just so happens to be our fee for bodyguarding. Now such a quest would never be interesting without a bit of lies and deceit, and as a result we end up killing the very lady we were hired to protect. Out of a job, Garrick (Skald) joins us.

At the Nashkel carnival Garrick is approached by an old man who gives him a book, free of charge! It mentions an old bard near the Ulcaster ruins, so we head in that direction. On the way we save a cow from xvarts (since we are three bards, this will be a village and dragons when we tell the story in the taverns) and beat down a group of ogres for Sarhedra.

We also encounter Ioin Gallchobhair and his two friends - from that encounter we learn Kivan and Coran are both quite frail. We also learn that we need to get ourselves some disabling magics when going up against more skilled warriors.

Myr'Cutio the undead bard is a tough cookie, and things get a little out of hand when he sings a Death song, scaring off Viconia and Coran. Those two manage to attract a whole bunch of hobgoblins who are homing in on us, and I get a little worried. Luckily we manage to slay Myr'Cutio before the hobgoblins get close so we don't have to fight on two fronts.

On our way north we pass through Gullykin; they have a kobold problem but we have no interest in going into the Firewine ruins at the moment. Some bounty hunters attack us on sight in the area, and we give them a taste of Blindness and Spook, after which it's just a matter of cleaning up.

We eventually reach a couple of farms plagued by ankhegs and zombies. We clear out both and leave as heroes, and even help a small child against some evil fishermen. A desire to shop takes us to Ulgoth's Beard where Viconia gets itchy fingers and goes about picking people's pockets. A halfling woman parts with a magical ring, but as we hurry out of town she yells "thief!" and I get the idea we are no longer welcome in Ulgoth's Beard.

Down by Beregost we hear of the mad cleric Bassilus and go off to find him. He's not particularly interested in a peaceful resolution and we end up killing him after disabling him with Blindness - surprisingly useful spell. Since we're already out and about we figure we might as well find Bjornin's half-ogres. They don't really try to hide and soon Bjornin is avenged.

I don't see Montaron at all during this fight - I know he stays in the shadows as much as possible, but he usually comes out for a backstab or two. We wait a while and then all of a sudden Montaron appears, proclaiming he was there the whole time. When I ask him why he didn't attempt a backstab he says he was still getting into position when the last of the half-ogres fell. I accept his explanation and we move out, but then happen upon a peculiar sight as we pass an old abandoned hut: a drow male lies dead, fresh blood and still fully equipped.

Viconia identifies his gear as that belonging to Drizzt and seems quite pleased about it too. I initially suspect Montaron as the culprit, but how could the diminutive man ever kill the legendary Drizzt, and in such a short time? Since he's dead anyway, I figure I might as well make use of his swords and armor - he won't miss them where he's gone. As we leave there are two things occupying my mind: how Drizzt died and wherever my two potions of Haste have gone - I had them just hours ago.

Our travels take us to the coastline where we encounter Shoal the Nereid - we take Arcand the Mad with us (to my surprise he's a very skilled priest), but he is killed by Shoal (also to my surprise, he's a very weak priest). After we beat her up a little she summons her ogre mage and we kill him. Then we kill Shoal in order to avenge poor Arcand.

We also mow down some sirines and flesh golems before reaching an archeological dig; when we leave, all the diggers are dead (they attacked us) and a doomsayer attacks us outside. I tank with Defensive Spin and soon it is no more.

Further south we help a paladin slay a horde of gibberlings before heading for Nashkel. We pass through a xvart village on the way, after killing all those tiny, blue bastards. They could sadly not be reasoned with. The bounty hunter waiting for us in the Nashkel in is slain and we get us some well-deserved rest.

Forgot to mention that Maiden of War is a berserker.
She used enrage to fight Niera. No problem, all Niera's spells were ineffective.
Against Silke and the mage at the carnival used enrage plus shield amulet.
Silke was still tough, used a couple of healing potions whilst she was invisible, but enrage and shield combination is awesome. Next stop Friendly arms to see if Tarnesh is as easily dealt with.
Tried helping Melicamp but to no avail.

Shadow, my new archer-thief, was one shotted by a goblin archer at level 1 in the area south of FAI. Rerolling the same character and starting again.

Those archers are pretty deadly for low level characters. The most annoying are ambushes by bandit archers during the first area transitions. Happened to me several times...

Update on my solo mage run.

Wynemora, level 9 mage with 44 HP, entered Cloakwood, cleared most of the areas, and destroyed Shadow druids. In the mines area, she killed four mercenaries guarding the entrance, using her spells of mass destruction.
Using similar tactics, she killed Hareishan, Natasha, Ogre mage, and finally Davaeorn.

Back in FAI, she sold loot, and traveled to Baldur’s Gate. Here, she obtained tomes of dexterity and intelligence (her INT is now marvelous 10).
Wynemora visited Ulgoth’s Beard to purchase Improved Invisibility, but the scrolls is, for some unknown reason, missing in the Innkeeper’s inventory. This complicates future battles a little.
She helped Shandalar to retrieve his cloak from Ice Island
and completed few quests in Baldur’s Gate (stealing Telescope, saving Casson).

Change of plans. I am going to attempt the no-reload trilogy challenge with a single class assassin (named Shadow),using a specially modified kit.

The custom kit is designed to allow the assassin to assume his proper role as the king of backstabbing and stealth killing, even at end game.

Kit Details:

+15 hide in shadows
+15 move silently

Additional backstabbing mods over a vanilla thief at levels 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35...for a total of x10 backstab modifier at level 40. Vanilla assassins get additional modifiers only at levels 17 and 21, for a total of x7 modifier at level 21 (max). So this is a serious upgrade. But it will allow the use of fast, low dmg weapons, such as daggers, which is supposedly the weapon of choice for an assassin. Shadow will exclusively use daggers during his career.

Improved +1 THACO over a vanilla thief every four levels, starting at level 4. (What good is backstabbing if you whiff the air?)

Can get grandmastery (five stars)in daggers and darts, the weapons of choice for fast, silent assassinations, involving the delivery of poison.

All other class weapons restricted to 1 star as with generic thieves.

Other mods include increased stack size of ammo, etc., item randomization mod, full plate mod, true grandmastery, and level cap removed. He will also be given a bag of holding, a gem bag, and a scroll case at start up.

Stats: Shadow Elven Assassin (Chaotic Neutral)

Str: 18.76
Dex: 19
Con: 16
Int: 15
Wis: 16
Cha: 10

This will be my first attempt with a single class assassin in general, and he is specifically designed for solo play, using daggers and darts.

Looks like an interesting kit, Angiras, if a bit strong. On the other hand, limiting yourself to pretty much the worst weapon type that can backstab (perhaps with the exception of clubs) might prove challenging. Not just the low damage, but also since most armor types are unkind to piercing damage. And then there's all the enemies that are immune or highly resistant to it...

Vaclavc, I like the style of your portrait. Where did you get it if I may ask?

Update on Deyeria the Blade and her party of rogues:

We venture into the Nashkel mine, fighting our way through kobolds before reaching the esteemed king Mulahey. Viconia and I take care of his minions - she casts Skull Trap, I tank - while the rest of the party take out Mulahey himself. He does manage to get off a Hold Person spell, but Kivan shrugs it off and soon he's down. We loot the place and give Xan back his Moonblade before sending him off and leaving ourselves.

Just outside the exit, a group of four amazons - two clerics, two rogues - ambush us. The clerics we kill while Webbed, but the rogues are smart enough to stay invisible until the Web experis, at which point they break invisibility to backstab me. I take heavy damage and am forced to use a few of our precious Extra Healing potions.

In the same area we come across a mage who has a bit of a slime fetish, but he won't share his spell with us. I charm him with Greagan's Harp but that doesn't help, although I do get him to waste his spells on the slimes. Him out of the picture, the slimes are easily dealt with, as is he once the charm wears off. We loot some tombs in the area, killing various undead before heading out.

On our way back to Nashkel we pick up Samuel and promise to bring him to the Friendly Arm Inn - we do so, but not before stopping in Nashkel for our reward. We also meet Nimbul there, another assassin. We use a charmed Oublek to tank (and discover subsequently that Oublek has a whole lot of cash on him), then I charm Nimbul and have him waste his spells. Why do things the hard way?

After handing over Samuel we're off to Beregost to confront Tranzig. In truth it's not so much a conflict as it is downright murder, but the ends justify the means. Or so I tell myself.

In Larswood we run into Teven, but he recognizes Kivan so we have to kill him - there goes our stealthy entrance. We also take out a couple of druids - one insane, one evil - in the area before marching on to Peldvale.

There we meet Raiken who's more than happy to bring us to the Bandit Camp. Trouble is, Tazok doesn't really like us, so we have to fight him and the entire camp. A couple of Webs and Fireballs take care of the majority of the enemies; the tougher ones I simply melee, aided by the occasional backstab from Montaron. We loot the entire place and head south towards Durlag's Tower.

On the way we slay a good deal of spiders, as well as some Thayvian Red Wizards - I charm one of the wizards and use him to absorb the spells of the others before a summoned spider kills him. With few spells left, the remaining mages are easily mopped up.

Further south we run into Mutamin who's made it his life goal to domesticate basilisks. That only makes it all the more fun when they kill him with their gaze attacks. We also encounter a group of very arrogant adventurers and teach them a thing or two about manners, mostly by Webbing them and cutting them up. That's the life of an adventurer; sad but true.

Things go well at Durlag's Tower; we kill a whole bunch of ghasts and Montaron backstabs three basilisks all by myself. I make a mistake, however, when I ask Coran to disarm a trap - I really meant Kivan for Coran has no experience whatsoever with traps, but he's VERY eager to please me even though I've turned down his advances countless times. Naturally he springs the trap and is killed by a Fireball. Back to Nashkel to raise him and back to Durlag's Tower again where we kill Kirinhale the succubus with ease (and traps).

Coran takes quite a beating once again by the hands of a ghostly mage - the poor elf is almost turned into a popsicle by a Cone of Cold spell but miraculously survives.

We clear out the first subterranean level of the tower with little trouble; most of the monsters may be strong in melee, but they can barely hit me in Defensive Spin. Not even the dwarven guardians pose much of a threat, but to be fair we did soften them up with traps and Skull Trap spells. In any case we've had enough of the Tower for now and so head for Cloakwood.

Reaching the mines take quite a while - not only do we have to stop and fight druids, spiders and wyverns, we're also forced to go back and raise Kivan when Centeol kills him with a Wand of Frost.

A group of Iron Throne mercenaries/assassins/bounty hunters - whatever you want to call them - await us by the entrance of the mines. We have the mages waste a couple of spells on a Charmed Drasus, but they charm him back almost immediately. Still, we got the mages and fighters separated and that makes everything a whole lot easier.

Though there are way more soldiers than actual slaves in the mines (why is that?) we fight our way down with relative ease; Montaron nearly clears out level two all by himself (okay, he almost died, but still). Davaeorn manages to injure us a bit with a Fireball in our midst, but then I charm him with Greagan's Harp and use his spells on his battle horrors. Once the charm wears off he's vulnerable to a backstab and soon we're out of the mine on our way to Baldur's Gate.

You have three party members who can actually play musical instruments! You should consider to found a band

Short update of my solo mage run:
Wynemora traveled to Firewine Bridge and cleared the area outside the dungeon. With Gauntlets of Weapon Expertise, taken from poor Meilum, she traveled back to Baldurs Gate, where she completed many minor quests, too numerous to list here. Most notably, she completed Poison quest; killed basilisk in the warehouse and Ogre mages near the docks; defeated mage Sunin and finally obtained Ring of Wizardry (her firepower considerably increased); she helped Aldeth in Merchant League, and started to work for Scar and Eltan; she fought victoriously with mercenaries at the top of Iron Throne building, using Haste, Mirror Image, Amulet of Missiles and Minor Globe of Invulnerability.
After successful fight, she reported back to Eltan, who sent her to Candlekeep.

Yea, you are probably right. Having x10 backstab modifier is probably too strong. I think I will reduce it back to x8, consistent with rogue rebalancing mod, and allow myself to use other non-piercing weapons should the need arise.

However, I still want to maintain a preference for daggers and darts...weapons that I tend to ignore otherwise, and which are "supposedly" the weapons of choice for assassins. Allowing assassins to get five stars in their "specialized" weapons thus makes sense, and otherwise, who is going to use them as weapons of choice? They just become vendor trash.

Inspite of their low 3 dmg, one of the nice things about darts is that they have a 3 APR rating, which is equivalent to the Tuigan bow, and they are readily available even in BG1.

Dagger of venom, available in Thunderhammer smithy, is my favorite weapon when playing thief (I currently use it to great effect with my mage, too). Its average damage output is comparable, if not better, to any other thief weapon out there.
As an assassin, you will be harshly penalized for your profession by rather small skill points pool - at least at low levels.
High backstabbing bonus is great, but in BG1, most enemies easily fall when hit by "vanilla" backstabbing thief.
IMHO, backstab supported by DUHM is one of the most overpowered abilities in the game - did I say that I love thieves of all sorts?
Good luck with your run!

Wish I could buy it from Thunderhammer, but I am using the item randomization mod, and that dagger could be in any one of a lot of very dangerous places. Definitely makes the game more challenging, because you have no idea where all the "old standby items" might be. Each game they are randomly placed in different spots, or on different enemies, and the vendors dont have much anything of value.

The small pool of skill points is also proving to be a challenge. To start out all my points are going into stealth, and I am travelling across zones at night so as to maximize my chances for hiding in shadows. With my new shadow boots, I am doing ok. However, my THACO still sucks, so I am relying mainly on ranged killing atm, using darts, with the poison weapon skill applied.

I agree, assassin is definitely very challenging kit to play at low levels. And that randomizing mod sounds interesting, too.

Maiden of war went to inform Landrin that he could return home, then went northward to deal with a few ankhegs and bandits. Agreed to aid Sonner, but on discovering the true nature of the problem, changed sides and ended up killing him, getting a nice flail in the process. Then helped sort out the problem of a woman with a zombie husband.
Ended up level six and specialised in two handed weapons.
Wnt to Beregost where Finch and Gavin joined the party at level 6. Then dual classed to a mage. (Used Shadow keeper to make the mage a conjurer).
Then went round picking up the necessary equipment which was scattered around.
Gavin seems quite impressed with me. Let's hope that continues. The party has been asked to go to the temple where he joined up, so that is next on the agenda.

Maiden of War was sent to deal with Mutamin. With the help of a friendly ghoul and some summoned skeletons the area was cleared of basilisks and medusas, gaining several levels on the way. Finch was petrified but a scroll revived her. So fsr do good. Gavin feels a bit awkward around my character. I wonder why?
