As some have already noticed, Mass Effect PC and many other EA titles are now available on Steam. You can check out the ME page here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/17460/ And a full list of the current EA games here: Click Here
You can also read the press release from Steam about carrying EA games here: http://store.steampowered.com/news/2116/
Mass Effect on Steam uses Steam's Digital Rights Management only.

If it uses only Steam DRM, is the following (from the EULA, someone posted it in the Steam ME forum) true:
"INTERNET CONNECTION, ONLINE AUTHENTICATION, END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT REQUIRED TO PLAY. TO ACCESS ONLINE FEATURES, YOU MUST REGISTER ONLINE. ONLY ONE REGISTRATION AVAILABLE PER GAME. EA TERMS & CONDITIONS AND FEATURE UPDATES CAN BE FOUND AT www.EA.COM. YOU MUST BE 13+ TO REGISTER ONLINE. EA MAY RETIRE ONLINE FEATURES AFTER 30 DAYS NOTICE POSTED ON www.ea.com."
Emphasis mine.
With regards to Steam, how does that work? Is it download through steam + register with EA/BW, and then be able to redownload it on any machine? or not? _________________ "The businessman whose master plan controls the world each day is blind to indications of his species slow decay" |

@ Chris Priestley- Is this worldwide as stated in the press release or North America only? |

@ Chris Priestley- Is this worldwide as stated in the press release or North America only? Confusion I think. The press release states Canada and the United States.
Quote: REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - December 19, 2008. Just in time for the holidays, Valve announced that, Spore(tm), Spore Creepy & Cute Parts Pack, Warhammer® Online: Age of Reckoning(tm), Mass Effect®, Need for Speed(tm) Undercover and EA SPORTS FIFA Manager 2009 are available now to gamers in the United States and Canada via Steam, a leading platform for PC games and digital content with over 15 million accounts around the world.

Some of us have not since you guys got some asinine lame IPA checking system going on via Steam. That is totally uncool and clearly sends a message to many potential customers that you dont consider them a customer (especially those of us that are US citizens who happen to work outside ConUS). Therefore by extension, since you dont want our money apparently, surely there no harm using the Internet version of the titles. After all people like me will never be a part of the local market we currently find ourselves in.
We the customer decide what market we are in not the publishers, some intermediary technology or meaningless geopolitical boundaries.
This crap really irks me to no end. _________________ @BioWare: Due to DRM policies, unjustified region restrictions & pricing issues on your titles you have lost a formerly very satisfied customer. These things only encourage infringement they dont prevent it.Edited By .Spartan on 12/19/08 22:17 |

That's from the Steam announcement.
Oh well, looks like my money still isn't good enough. Unbelievable if it's NA only. |

I must say I am very glad that you guys (and EA) finally dropped securom. This bodes very well. To show my support I am going to get Mass Effect from Steam the first chance I get along with recommending it. This could, and probally will, mean that Dragon Age has no securom meaning a day one buy for me. |

Since this will likely be discussed for a while, I will resticky this for the time being.

Congrats to EA and BioWare on getting MEPC (as well as other games) on Steam. I'm pretty sure you'll see some decent sales numbers through that. There are a lot of Steam fans out there (alas, I'm not one of them).
(I also wouldn't be surprised if they appear on the European Steam network at some point as well.) _________________ It's rogue, dammit, ROGUE!!! |

I hope so, Europe's seems to be a bigger market for PC games than the US these days. Still, given EA's recent history, I'm not exactly confident. |

First, I have to ask where exactly this text is coming from (you know, links or it didn't happen). I am looking at the EULA that I sent over to Valve for Mass Effect and it does not contain that text. At all. Nor on the product page. _________________ It fits in the Beta LOCK. |

I don't know if I'll get any of the games there, but I'm sure that it will be a lot more acceptable to a lot of people.
I still don't like to use Steam for Single Player games though. The online requirement still bugs me for a game with no actual online content. Although the autopatching can be nice, and it allows for easier D/L and install of the DLC.
So, Thanks Chris. I know the past few months likely haven't been easy on you, having to deal with the entire situation. It's a step in the right direction, and shows that EA is willing to compromise to a certain degree.
One question though - How long ago did EA start negotiating with Steam to get the games on there? I'm kinda wondering how long this has been in the works - was it before, or shortly after the Spore and MEPC release?
Just remember - Just Say NO to SecuROM! Now you know, and knowing is half the battle. G-I-JOE! _________________

I can't yet officially comment on exactly how wrong this page is.

Derek, that quote above may be from the Spore entry, or perhaps an earlier version of the Mass Effect page. What I saw on the Mass Effect page about 10 minutes ago was this:
Quote: INTERNET CONNECTION, PERIODIC ONLINE AUTHENTICATION, AND END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT REQUIRED TO PLAY.
But now it says this:
Quote: INTERNET CONNECTION AND END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT REQUIRED TO PLAY.
So perhaps the "periodic online authentication" was just an oversight that made it onto the Steam page, that's now being corrected to jibe with what Chris said above. Hopefully it's true - we're all remembering 2K Games including SecuROM on the Steam version of Bioshock, even in the dang demo. |
