I have a problem similar to Jhope and Krolm.

You see my girlfriend and I just dropped $1000 on a new computer for the sole purpose of playing BGII together. Yeah, I've been convincing her for the last couple years that it would be worth it. Of course I also bought another copy of BGII (SoA & ToB) and installed the game on both computers with no mods or patches. I then bought a D-link router model DI-624 and hooked both computers up at her house since she is the only one with internet. While she was at work I connected the two computers using TCP/IP and it worked on the first try! I cannot begin to express my excitement!

So when my girlfriend gets home I tell her that it's working and we attempt to connect the EXACT SAME WAY and get the "cannot connect" message. Since that moment I have not slept trying to find a cure for the problem.

I have read "The Multiplayer Topic Part I & II" entirely several times and tried everything... I installed the patches on both computers, checked the frame rate and cache on both computers, and attempted forwarding the ports on my router. I know that lots of people say routers are bad for this sort of thing, but it worked the first time with no port forwarding. Why would it just stop working?

Please, oh PLEASE, if anyone can help me... Don't make me take my new computer back! I seriously have no use for it if I cannot satisfy my desire for BGII! I have waited so long and invested so much $$$ in hopes of playing it with my girl! I will do anything to get multiplayer to work, and I shall not sleep until I find a solution.

Thankyou. Any help will be extremely appreciated.

Hello all.
Lately I've been trying to get a BG2 game running with a friend of mine, we're using TCP/IP.
It once worked, but we don't know what changed since the last try. We've tried running direct TCP/IP, Gamespy and Allseeing Eye. None enables us to connect to each other. Windows XP firewalls are off, we both have the exact same patches and no mods, I doubt our framerates are different but I will check this.
I have attempted to open the required ports in my router's firewall and Norton firewall. It doesn't help at all. I have made a screenshot of my current router firewall settings, perhaps this will clarify it. If we both disable our software firewalls it has no effect either.
I can neither join nor host a game.
I'm thinking the problem is my router's firewall (my buddy has none) so please tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Screenshot of current settings:

Having just installed Windows XP, I ran into this problem which may also help you. In order to MP, I now have to disable all virus protections including Adware I do not like doing this, but there is no way around it. Also had to disable popup protection. You appear to have handled all the other problems I am aware of and should be able to join. Kevin Lynch might be able to advise you re: ports. If not, he can point you in the right direction. Good hunting.

[Edit] Just fixed up your quote codes. They weren't set up right.

Just thought I'd mention that Jason created a new BG2 FAQ that contains some multiplayer info here for anyone needing some details on ports and firewall setup.

Hello all.
I found a solution to my problem that might help some of you who are trying to play multiplayer over a LAN. I spent several days trying to get a TCP/IP connection working, and ran into many of the same problems others have posted on this thread... I could transfer files over the LAN and even see the game session name, but BGII would still not let me join the game.

I was so involved with trying to fix this problem that I had completely overlooked the fact that there were several other protocols in BGII allowing for a multiplayer game. I flipped my two computer towers around and realized that they both had 9-pin serial ports (duh!). I reluctantly headed over to CompUSA and bought a "null modem" serial cable for about $15, and kept the reciept becuase I didn't expect it to work. I thought it would be slow, and that I would have to do some complex reconfiguration through Windows XP for the computers to "see" each other and so on, but decided to just hook it up run BGII anyway. What's this? It actually let me join the game on the first try! That's too good to be true. I quit the game and tried it again just to make sure. Yep! Still works! And it's plenty fast (I don't really see a notable difference in speed either way). And the connection is impervious to hackers. So for those of you still struggling with your LAN, port forwarding, downloading patches/mods, checking your frame rate for the millionth time, etc., my girlfriend and I are already riding the elusive serial cable out of Irenicus' Dungeon and into the lovely world of Amn!

Anyway, I am not the smartest computer person and I don't really play many games except for BGII (the absolute greatest game of all time!), so this may be obvious to many of you... But I hope this helps some of you as this type of solution can be easily overlooked. Good luck.

Is it possible to play over a lAN? according to the book, under TCP/IP it is supposed to auto detect games on a local area connection, but this is not working for me. Do I need to unblock the ports? I wouldn't think that necessary, but I don't know. Any help appreciated.

It sounds like you may have a problem with memory size. You can never have too many RAMS or video memory. Good hunting.

Ok. A friend and I are trying multiplayer. We both set our routers to do the proper ports outlined in the readme file.

When I join his game, I get to the character arbitration screen --- it says "waiting until the server can accept new players" -- then drops me from the game after about 5 or 10 seconds. During that time, I can type in the box, my friend can hear me, but I can't hear what he is saying. After 10 secs or so, it just terminates the session for me.

Same thing happens if we try it the other way. We are both running the same (newest) version.

"waiting until the server can accept new players" -- anyone got any ideas? Thanks. I searched but couldn't find anything.

You are so close, that has to be frustrating. Usually you connect within seconds of receiving that message. If you both have SOA TOB installed, you need to make sure you have the patch and that your cache size and frame rates match. Good hunting.

I want to start a multiplayer game to make 6 characters and than make it a singleplayer game. I've done this before and than it worked. But for some reason the buttons of IPX and tcp/ip are grey and can't be used. Also, when I try to do a serial game, when I press start game nothing happens. No matter whether I only have bg2 SOA installed or all kinds of add ons and custom packs it just doesn't work. I don't have any firewall on while trying it. Does anyone have an idea how I could solve this problem? I would really really appreciate it .

I have exactly the same problem, will noone help us!?! its odd, there is no way I can play multiplayer online or offline, controlling all characters! I runb a 4.4 Ghz XP computer, i heard something about security issues conflicting with the game in XP but even with none, like I have, it doesn't work!! i am in dispair!

Well, that makes three of us (or six, if you count the friends we're trying to play with). My friend and I also have taken down our firewalls, spyware and pop-up blockers, forwarded ports and ensured our config is the same (framerate, cache).

We connect and recognize each other fine (that is, I see his game name, etc). And while we can see each other on the character arbitration screen, the joining person's name is greyed out and cannot be selected.

In the area above the chat field, there are three messages. The first is something to the effect of "game is in progress" or "game is running." The second I can't recall. And the final one is I suspect where the real problem lies: "waiting until the server can accept new players."

Like the others who posted here, I'm booted shortly thereafter.

Has this been submitted directly to Bioware support, anyone?

Thanks
Jason

Just as a follow-up:

1) Kevin was kind enough to respond to my PM, and indicated that, while he didn't have any suggestions for an actual fix, he did think it'd be appropriate to bump this question up to the gents at tech support. So,
2) I've emailed Bioware support with our glitch, and am hopeful they'll have the time and the interest to offer a solution. If/when they're able to respond, I'll post it here for review by other having this problem.

In the meantime, if anyone makes any progress on the "waiting until the server can add new players"/boot glitch, let us know.

I really wish I could help you gentlemen, but this one I really do not have an answer for, only speculation which is not really good advice. The usual fixes of disabling firewalls, popup stoppers, making sure frame rate and cache size are the same, making sure that all of you have both SOA and TOB installed and the TOB patch downloaded is not helping you.

The only other thing I ran into was one of my partners leaving a projected image somewhere. This drove us nuts until we went back and got rid of the image, then everything proceeded as normal. It was on the second floor of an inn in the Bridge Dist. I really hope that you get the answers you need. Good hunting.
