Hi,
I have a question and a recommendation regarding multi-player.
I've been playing BG and related games off and on for quite a few years now and have run into all the typical problems with multi-player: patch level, frame rate, typo on the IP address, etc. It has been a while since I tried multi-player, and the last time I did it was with quite a different setup (machines and network were quite different; machines and OS's were older, network was using no router (bnc cable) ). Well, I decided to play some multi-player today and had a lot of troubles getting it to work (mainly, I kept getting the dialog saying it couldn't connect). I tried BG2 and then BG1 (with expansions and latest patches). I fought it for quite a while before I finally decided to go look for help. I found and read through some of these posts, although there's quite a few and I admit I didn't read them all. From those I did read, it appears as if many people are having similar problems, at least when using TCP protocol. Based on those posts, I would have to take an educated guess that my problem may be that my machines and DirectX versions are much newer than they were back when things used to work. An old windows 95 machine that used to work still appears to be connecting properly, but my newer machines with newer OS's and newer versions of DirectX are not working.
So my advise is to use my eventual solution, at least if you are playing on a LAN: switch to IPX protocol. It seems to work perfectly. I tried this after reading a post advising a null modem cable - thanks to that poster. I don't think there's any shame giving up on TCP in this case - it appears these games didn't anticipate Microsoft's inability to maintain backward compatability in their DirectX.
That is, assuming I am right about that, and that's my question: Am I likely correct in assuming the problem with TCP is the versions of DirectX? My suspicions on this come from my old win 95 machine with an old DirectX version working, while my newer machines with DirectX 9.something refused to connect (OS's are 98SE and ME). Could be the OS's instead of DirectX, I suppose. But seems like some of the posts were mentioning dx, while there was even a patch for tosc and dx8. I guess it doesn't really matter since I've got it working, but it just bugs me. Plus if I want to play over the internet at some point I'll want TCP to start working on at least one of the newer machines.

Thanks

Okay, cancel that thanks. I have no idea what you're talking about. Desktop, I got, and then you lost me on 'run'. I've been using a computer for a while, though I still haven't caught up on internet slang. Be more specific please. And forget I EVER batted my eyes at you, you double-talking nitwit of an... experienced... brilliant... okay, I'm gone.

Hopefully this will help, batted eyes or no. Hit the windows key on your keyboard. About the fourth item from the bottom you should see the run icon. Click on it and follow the above instructions ie: cmd enter ipconfig enter. Good hunting.

Oh! Okay, I've got it. The start menu. I thought you really meant the desktop. Okay, I got it. Thank you very much. And redo those batted eyes.

I've searched this thread and the one that existed beforehand as well - to no avail.

My girlfriend and I have played through BG1 and ID1 completely with no problems at all. I've just built her a new PC, so we can finally play BG2 together, but she's having issues connecting. When she tries to connect via TCP/IP she gets the "Cannot Connect To This Game" Error. Can anyone help me resolve this issue?

In order to get some things out of the way:

+ Our Cache sizes are the same.
+ Our Framerates are the same.
+ We run the game with no mods installed.
+ We've both installed the latest patch.
+ Neither of us have any firewalls installed at this time.
+ Neither of us have a router.
+ 100% sure the IP is correct.

I really do appreciate any help that anyone is kind enough to offer. Baldur's Gate 2 is my favorite game of all time and I've been anticipating the day when we could play together for a long time.

Thank You

This is highly unusual. You seem to have covered all the bases and should be able to join each other. The only thing that crosses my mind at this point is that possibly one of you has SOA TOB installed and the other only has SOA. You cannot join under those circumstances. I will do this for you. Send me a PM and I will exchange IP addresses with you and your partner. If one of you cannot join me and the other can, we will at least know which one of you has the problem. Good hunting.

Nope, both of us are running solely Shadows of Amn.

Any other ideas or speculation at all? I PMed you, by the way. Thanks

Is there any way to setup a dedicated server for Baldurs Gate 2? The only computer my friends and I have that is not behind a router is needed for work and such, so I was wondering if it was possible to run a dedicated server that does not require the hosting computer to play.

There are no dedicated servers in BG II as there are in NWN. There are no servers of any kind. If there is a way to set one up, I have never heard of it, but I am interested in learning also. Good hunting.

I was on the macplay site today, looking up stuff about multiplayer games, and I noticed that it said that Macs couldn't play online with PCs. Is this true? I really hope not(because I obviously have a Mac), but if it is true I'd still want to start or join a game, I like to use an imported illusionist from BGI with no cheat codes or mods. If you're interested you can pm or email me (legolaselfbow@aol.com).

Yep, it's true. The game versions have to be the exact same, right down to patches, and the fact that the games are for different platforms already makes them different versions.

Hi people! I've being trying to get this game work over the network. We both installed the game on the same way:
- BG2
- BG2 TOB
- Patch 26498
- Fixpack
- The darkest day 1.03

I'm trying to host the game, and I don't have a software firewall. I do have a router, but I even detached it to try to play the game online. (and yes IP was entered correctly).

When he tries to join the game all he gets is a message that he can't connect. We also tried it the other way around (that he hosts the game, but that didn't work either). Does anybody has a clue?

I would venture that The Darkest DAy aka Doomsday mod is your problem. It has many bugs and causes many problems according to many gamers who post here. I have never downloaded it and am thus, no expert on it, but most information I have read is negative. Good hunting.
